Clean Energy with LADWP: 3 Renewable Energy Programs
Want to support clean energy but not sure where to start? If you're an LADWP customer, there are three different programs that make it easy to go green—whether you rent, own a home, or just want to support renewables through your electricity bill.
Here’s a quick guide to each option, including who qualifies, what it costs, and how to sign up:
🌿 1. Green Power for a Green LA
Support renewable energy without installing anything! This program lets you opt in to having up to 100% of your electricity come from renewable sources like wind and solar.
Who it’s for: Any LADWP customer (renters and homeowners)
Cost: Adds 3¢ per kilowatt-hour to your bill (about $6/month for the average home)
Impact: Helps LADWP increase demand for utility-scale clean energy projects across California
☀️ 2. Shared Solar
Get the benefits of solar—without a rooftop. Similar to “community solar,” this program gives you access to solar energy from local LADWP solar farms and locks in a stable electricity rate for five years.
Who it’s for: LADWP customers who live in multifamily buildings, rent, or can’t install rooftop panels
Cost: No upfront cost; you’ll pay a fixed solar energy rate (typically lower than standard rates!)
Impact: Reduces reliance on fossil fuels and expands solar access to renters and apartment dwellers
🏡 3. Solar Rooftops Program
LADWP installs solar panels on your roof—at no cost to you. You won’t pay anything for installation or maintenance. In exchange, LADWP uses the solar energy your roof generates, and you receive up to $12,000 over 20 years in lease payments.
Who it’s for: Homeowners with a suitable roof
Cost: Free to join and maintain, and you earn lease payments of $240-$600 per year
Impact: Helps LADWP build a decentralized, renewable energy grid while homeowners earn passive income
